Martin Luther King, Jr.
*What does this quote mean to you? How does it relate to to situations or obstacles we have discussed in class? Give an example from a movie, book or history that could relate to this quote and explain how it does.
Martin Luther King Jr. once said “darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” What I think this quote means is that you cannot fight fire with fire. You have to find something else to put it out. Like a real life problem. You can’t fix the problem by just fighting and fighting and fighting. You have to resolve it to fix the problem. Another example is trying to get over an addiction. Maybe it’s something serious. Maybe you’re going through a problem and you’re trying to find something to heal yourself but you choose wrong decisions. You can’t drive away the darkness with darkness. You can’t heal if you’re choosing to make more bad decisions. You have to find something that makes you happy and that makes you forget all your problems.
ReplyDeleteThis quote relates a lot to the time of segregation against the blacks. Whites didn’t like the blacks and they used to treat them very differently from the rest. They put them in schools where they didn’t get taught as much as the whites. Some didn’t really get an education at all. Blacks had to sit in the back of the bus and whites in the front. Which isn’t right at all. Those times had to be the worst and we couldn’t fix the problem because hate couldn’t drive out hate. Love had to but no one liked each other. That was until Martin Luther King made the ‘I have a dream’ speech.’ He was the “love” when everyone hated each other and he changed many peoples opinions on each other which was a good thing at the end of the day. You can relate this quote to many things and you can have many different views on it but this is my opinion on what Martin Luther King Jr. once said.
I completely agree with nick. You can just keep going at a problem with violence. You have to take the time to understand what is going on and try be as kind as you can about it. You should always choose to do what your heart tells you is right
DeleteI do agree with Nick. Not only does he explain the quote, he gives perfect examples. After reading this he made me understand the quote 100x better. You take your time truly explaining what the quote means to you and it really helped! Good Job Nick!
DeleteI agree with Nick. You cant solve a problem by just fighting. You have to resolve the problem, to fix the problem. I think Nick did a good job explaining his reasoning. This quote also does relate to the segregation in the early 1900's
DeleteI completely agree with you when you say you can't fight fire with fire. Just fighting won't fix a problem, resolving it without the violence part will. I think Nick explained this quote very well, also when relating it to Dr. King during the times of segregation.
DeleteI completely agree with you, Nick!! Nothing can ever be solved by fighting. In order for things to get better, you have to fix the problem. I also agree with you when you said you cannot fight fire with fire. Your comment made me understand this quote from a different perspective. I also agree with you when you related this quote to the early 1990's.
DeleteI thought the same exact thing when i first read the quote. You cant fight fire with fire. I also agree that you cant solve anything by making wrong choices. If youre trying to fix the problem, you need to make the right choices to do it. You also gave a great example!
DeleteI totally agree with you. You expressed your reasoning in the essay perfectly. The addiction comparison worked out great. I also like how you said MLK was the love while everyone was the hate. That was a great expression! You portrayed your perspective of the quote nicely. The segregation comparison was great too.
DeleteThis quote has a very strong and important meaning. This quote, “darkness can not drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that,”by Martin Luther King Jr. means that you cant expect people To be respectful to you if you are going to disrespect them. Basically this quote means that you have to treat people the way you want to be treated. If everyone hates each other the world will never get anywhere. If everyone was understanding and kind to one another the world could be so much nicer. A big example of this was during segregation in the Unites States. All the white people hated the African Americans and they never got anywhere through violence. The main way they ended up getting rights was through peaceful protests and trying to reason with others. You cant get anywhere With violence and disrespect you have to be kind to one another no matter their race, religion, or anything else. All people are equal and the sooner we realize this the sooner we can all live peacefully. All throughout history wars and conflict have been caused by the Disrespect or violence of others. Each time this happened people would die or suffer and that proves that nothing can be gained from that. I feel that if we had peace all throughout the world Everyone would benefit somehow. What Martin Luther was trying to say through his quote was that you cant just bully people into doing something you want. At some point there going to fight back. If you are kind about asking people to do things though they are more likely to do them. In other words, Treat people as you yourself would like to be treated.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with brendan. This quote basically means you have to treat people the way you want to be treated. And you can't treat them wrong and expect to get the respect you want. Also he is right, you cant get anywhere with violence and disrespect. I totally agree with brendan and I liked how he put his response together.
DeleteI also agree with you. I liked how you explained the quote too. I also liked when you said if everyone hates each other the world will never get any where. I thought your example of segregation was good too. overall i think you did a good job.
DeleteThe great Martin Luther king Jr. once said: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” What I believe this quote means is if you are going threw a bad time, you can’t fix it with doing more bad choices. More bad choices added on top of bad choices, do not equal up. I believe the only darkness that could possibly be in your life is sadness. And if you’re going threw a patch of darkness, you need to find something to occupy yourself. Not only so you can be away from the darkness as much as you can.. You will soon find yourself replacing the hate and darkness with love. And the only hate i believe you can have mentally, is believing you can not do something.
ReplyDeleteDuring class we have been discussing segregation, and racism. Around this time (the 1930’s), whites would separate themselves from the “colored”. They would do whatever they could to keep the African Americans away from their race. Not only did they try to separate themselves from the African Americans, they would be extremely racist towards them. They would call them names, some that are not acceptable to say. And they would get treated like complete dirt. At this time in history, the white people believed that they were the “best” race. And that the only other race that wasn’t as perfect as them, that they believed they should look down on was the African Americans. When Martin Luther King gave his I have a dream speech, everyones perceptive changed. Before he gave that speech, everyones minds were set to hate everyone and everything because of all the hate that was going on in the society around them. Then, when Martin Luther King came in, he was love that drowned out all the hate.
Martin Luther King Jr once said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” I think this means a lot of different things to different people. So people are wiser than others about it. I think this means that you can't blame something or someone when it comes to things people fight about. Martin Luther King Jr was trying to fight segregation. This quote helped prove a point. A point that some people still today do not agree with. He wanted everybody to be 100% equal instead of “Equal but Separate.” This quote did affect thousands and thousands of people back in the 30’s through 60’s. The fact that this quote is still see today has such a big role on all of us and how we should always be equal. This quote reminds me of what MLK wanted and how much he fought for the colored and whites to be equal. Without him, we would still be split today.
ReplyDeleteThis quote by Martin Luther King Jr was inspirational to all. I think relates to the book “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Even though i did not read the whole book yet, i realized that it takes time a little before MLK started his “I Had A Dream” Speech. It was about 20-25 years before. So I thought it would make sense to connect the book and the quote from King. Hopefully “To Kill A Mockingbird” will start to connect with MLK and describe the separation of black and whites. I find segregation very interesting and hope To Kill A Mockingbird will answer a lot of my questions. I look forward to reading the rest of the book. I do agree with this quote by MLK because i did not think it was right for the non colored and colored to be separated.
I agree with Alyssa. I also think "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a good example that relates a lot to this quote. This quote really does have to do with segregation. You explained it very well how segregation relates to this quote. I too, think this quote connects with the book even though it took place 20-25 years before but had the same thing going on in both times.
DeleteMartin Luther King Jr. once said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This quote means can mean different things. This can kinda go back to the golden rule, “ treat someone how you want to be treated”. If you treat someone like crap they will treat you like crap back. You can only be treated nice if you are treat them nice first. You can't stop someone from being mean to you if you were always mean to them. If you want that to change start being nice. If everybody was nice in the world, there would be no hate. You can’t stop hate, by giving hate back. You change it by giving love and changing the whole atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteDuring class we discussed what was going on in the south in the 1930’s. In the south there was segregation between the whites and the “coloreds”. The african americans were the minority they were treated like they were nothing. Kids had to go to separate schools. The whites wanted to be completely separated from the blacks. Along with the separation they were always racist towards them. The blacks always had the worst of it. They were given the hammy down text books, just treated like they were not supposed to be on the earth. “The Sneetches” is a good reference to this. The star bellied Sneetches were segregating and discriminating the plain bellied Sneetches. This man shows up to stop all this. He shows up with a machine that says “star on”. The plain bellied Sneetches all jump in it to have a star. Now the original star bellied Sneetches are unhappy and want no star. He has a machine that says “star off”. Now all the Sneetches dont know who they are.In the end they dont segregate any of them, they all think of them the same way.
Martin Luther King Jr. once said "darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. To me, this quote means that you shouldn’t go against something in a wrong way, even when that thing isn’t right itself. It’s pointless to fight over two sides when both the sides are wrong, because no one will win. For example, in class we have talked about the Montagues and the Capulets fighting against each other, and in the end, they both lost a few relatives. In history, Martin Luther King Jr. fought for the freedom of the blacks. There were many peaceful protests, but cops killed some of them anyway. There was no point in fighting over a simple request that they wanted, but at the time most of the people around were too racist to care. Over time, blacks boycotted and started carpooling and taking cabs. They also boycotted certain stores. The whites didn’t like this, and claimed that carpooling was illegal and the cab fares were way under the minimum and had to raise them. There are many times in life when you can get into some sort of fight that has no point at all. It could be a random conversation, someone accidentally bumping into or hitting someone, or even just overhearing someone talking about someone else. For example, you could be in gym near a crowd of people when one of them says, “hey isn’t that short kid over there a punk ass b****?” or something, and then you go up to he/she and start getting into an argument, when they weren’t even talking about you. Violence, sadly, occurs a lot in school, at home, on the bus, or even at home or in a public place. It won’t make anything better than it already is most of the time, so these words by martin Luther King Jr. should be followed.
ReplyDeleteMartin Luther King, Jr once said,”Darkness cannot drive out darkness;only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This quote means to me that darkness cannot go against darkness and darkness represents evil. Evil can’t go against itself. Light represents love. Since light and dark are the complete opposite from each other, one drives out its opposite. Same thing with hate and love. Hate can’t go against itself, only love goes against hate and hate against love. It is one or the either but both are not the same. This quote relates to situations and obstacles we have discussed in class because we have talked about segregation in the 1930’s. In the 1930’s the blacks were segregated from the whites and both hated each other. We discussed that in “To Kill a Mockingbird” there was a lawyer who was fair to everyone whether black or white. He didn’t think it was just and right for a black to have no rights, so he stuck up for them because it was the right thing even if the world was against him. For example, the people of Maycomb County are very judgmental about others, they made rumors about other people’s lives in the town, and that is an example of darkness and hate. Atticus Finch, the lawyer, respects everyone and doesn’t stick his nose somewhere it doesn’t belong, by this he is light because he is different from everyone else by doing good and showing love. An example from history that relates to this quote is Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a civil rights leader that peacefully protested for equal rights for the blacks. He said this quote but his actions were evidence that backed up this quote. When he protested and walked, people would spit at his face, throw stuff at him, mock him, anything that would show violence. Although he was hated, he did not do anything to the people that hated him but kept walking peacefully showing no reaction of hate. He was the light to people because he did not show any hate to the ones that hated him. When he gave his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech he did not encourage protesting violently or any hate, it was all about giving love, he talked about. His leadership was remembered because of the light he shined to the world. This is what I think of this quote and an example of history that relates to it.
ReplyDelete"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." This is a quote by Martin Luther king. To me this quote means that if someone hates you it doesn’t mean you should hate them back. If you know someone doesn’t like you should show them love and not hate because if you hate them back it won’t solve anything. Maybe if you show them love they might change your mind about you and maybe think you’re not so bad after all. If they still don’t like you just keep trying to be kind to them and its just their problem if they still dislike you. But remember you have a one hundred percent better chance of making them like you by showing them love rather than hate back to them.
ReplyDeleteThis quote can also relate to situations or obstacles we have discussed in class. One situation we discussed in class that can relate to this quote is segregation. Before we started reading To Kill a Mockingbird we discussed how African Americans were being segregated in the south of the United States. This can relate perfectly to the quote, not only because Martin Luther King jr. was an African American fighting for freedom, but also because white people treated them very harshly and it never solved anything to be that cruel to them. This was sadly American history which it relates to also. Now though we can look back at this history and realize that by treating people so harshly is not right and will not accomplish anything because only love can drive out hate, not more hate. So when Martin Luther King jr. said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that,” he basically is saying not to hate people even if they hate you back, show love instead.
What the quote above meant to me is that the only way to fight off evil and hate is with love and good. Some people might think to fight fire with fire but that isnt always the way to go. Smart and good people would just be nice to a person who is mean because it might rub off on them. If you are mean back to a person who is mean then they aren't going to learn anything, they are just going to be mean to the next person and the next person. When you are nice to someone who is mean to you they will get curious on why you are still nice to them. And when they realize that being mean isnt always the way to go they'll learn to be nicer to others. People sometimes just need learn how to be good from other people because they dont know any better. And all they need is that extra little push to let them know that people care for them and to make friends they just have to care for people back. So when Martin Luther king said dont fight darkness with darkness instead fight with light. This states that its better for you to be nicer to thaf person and nasty because the outcome can different. For all you know you and that person can become best friends because you were simply just nice to him or her. People will then see that person might not be ass bad and other people might start to like that person. And all because you were nice for seconds you changed someones life and make that persons life better.
ReplyDelete“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This quote has such a deep, powerful, and strong meaning. I would expect nonetheless from the genius himself, Dr. Martin Luther King. I think this quote means that hatred cannot be resolved with even more hatred. Only love can keep people from hating each other. Without love, the world would be an extremely morbid place. Although there is tons of negativity in this huge world, love is the only thing that seems to keep most people sane. The world is an extremely crazy place but treating each other with love and respect can really go a long way.
ReplyDeleteThis quote can relate to almost anything anyone has ever faced in life. Negativity surrounds our world. The first thing that came to my mind when I read this quote was the story, The Sneetches by Dr. Suess. The Sneetches can really come hand in hand with Martin Luther King because they both have to deal with segregation and equality. The Sneetches is about two different groups, the plain bellies and the star bellies. In relation to the two different races, the two groups had a hatred for each other. After battling a long feud between the two groups, they learned that equality is important. They started doing many things together and realizing that despite being plain bellies or star bellies the both shared one thing in common, they were both Sneetches. They also learned to love one another for who they are, plain bellied or star bellied. The negativity stopped between the two groups. Which is why The Sneetches relates so much to this quote by Dr. Martin Luther King. Equality and freedom is an important ingredient for happiness and love.
The first thing I thought when I read Martin Luther King’s quote, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that,” was that you can’t fight fire with fire. That’s what I think the quote is directly saying. The first part of the quote (Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that) means you can’t fix a problem, with negativity and something bad. As an example, if you and your best friend get into a fight, the first thing you want to do is give them dirty looks, not talk to them, maybe even be disrespectful to them. But is that fight really worth it? After you’re over the fight you probably won’t even remember what it was about. If you’re nasty to each other it wont fix the problem. “Only light can do that.” Maybe next time you can just apologize, even if it isn’t your entire fault. If you don’t the fight will just drag on. Be the better person.
ReplyDeleteAn example with the second part of the quote, (Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that) is when there was the horrible and nasty opinions on the colored people. Everything and everyone was separate from each other. White people and black people had so many different things. They went to separate schools, had separate bathrooms, separate transportation, and were treated so differently. It wasn’t equal at all. They didn’t even get the same education, obviously. But they treated each other with hate and disrespect. That was the darkness and hate that he meant. When he gave his speech, that’s when people started to realize that they couldn’t fix the problems with hate. They saw people were people, no matter what color. The love and the light drove out the darkness and hate.
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." This quote is very moving, as it was said by a man who enforced movement. To me, King's quote means that only light can push the darkness away. Therefore, If you mix hate with hate, You'll only be left with that. But, If you want to push hate out, you can only do so with love. King knew that if he wanted to bring equality between whites and coloreds, he could not do so with hate, violence, and public riots. Instead, he preached to crowds and helped lead peaceful protests. King was optimistic about being peaceful and befriending and joining races in harmony so everyone could finally be equal. Not to have "segregation", but to have legitimately been equal.
ReplyDeleteKing's quote can relate to a lot of situations and help guide through large obstacles. Although there are endless examples, the one I chose to explain is how the quote pertains to when segregation was a large problem about 80 years ago. Back in the 1920's to 1930's, coloreds and whites were unequal. Whites tried to say we were "Separate, but equal". It wasn't equal at all. Coloreds were treated awfully compared to whites and still, people claimed they were ALL equal. It was extremely unfair. The quote comes into play when you remember that coloreds lead protests to earn their equality among whites. Not segregation, but real equality. If the blacks had tried to obtain equality with force, It'd only make the entire situation worse. MLK was wise to lead the group of the coloreds looking for equality with peace and love. There was never a riot led and promoted. After all, you can't get rid of hate with hate.
