Martin Luther King, Jr.
*What does this quote mean to you? How does it relate to to situations or obstacles we have discussed in class? Give an example from a movie, book or history that could relate to this quote and explain how it does.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can.” These are a few words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In my own words, this quote means that you can’t always depend on the same things to depend on each other, you sometimes have to let the opposite things depend on each other. This also means to me that you should always have someone in your life to lean on when your falling. I mean that by when your down or in trouble you should have that special person to go to. This quote affects me in many ways. It affects me because of the segregation and growing up in an white family I feel bad even kow I wasn't alive in segregation all in all I really hate segregation and really didn't like how black people were treated so I love how martin luther king jr made this quote
ReplyDeletei think stephen did a very good job. he explained the quote and used explains. I like how he says how he didnt like how the blacks were treated because it was unfair. all in all i think stephen did a good job on his reply.
DeleteMartin Luther King Jr. once said “ Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that.” To me this quote means that if you wish to stop the hatred upon you do not fight back with hatred. Simply show your attacker kindness and love. Showing someone that already dislikes you anger and hatred will only produce more problems. But giving them a reason to like you by being nice and giving them no more fuel for their fire they will come to no longer hate you. For example, lets say your having a bad day and some kid runs into you and yells at you. You would most likely dislike that kid.But if he apologized and acted courteous then you have no reason to be angry so simply you won’t. Acting a certain way can change other peoples opinions on you or on a group of people. I think that Martin Luther King Jr.’s quote at the time was toward the entire african american population, For instance when someone shows you hatred don’t show hatred back that just gives them ammunition. show them love. Then they have nothing bad to say about you. Also it’s very difficult to yell curses and racial slurs at a person yelling back nothing but uplifting positive things. The whole point is don’t give them anything to slander you about. Don’t hurl back insults. Just be kind, caring and loving. This is what I think Martin Luther King meant when he said,” Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
ReplyDeleteI think Eric did great on his response to MLK's quote. I liked how he used examples of segregation in his response saying that instead of saying mean things to people saying mean stuff to you that you just keep positive and say good things back. Today people always flip their crap over the littlest things and when push comes to shove there will always be fighting amongst people. Instead of giving our rivals or enemies ammunition with remarks and such next time we should all think to our selves and say "well now i'm going to be the bigger person and let it go this time."

I think that this quote means that you can’t expect hate to go away when it still continues to go about. You need people to care for one another to drive out the hate. This goes well with the comparison above, where only light can drive out darkness, which really shows that things had to change in order for any good to come out of it. This was relating to when racism was a big with African Americans. Most people besides their own looked down upon African Americans for having a different skin color. Which eventually lead to segregation, this is when they had different designated areas labeled “White,” and “Colored.” The “Colored,” areas were always low grade and low quality while the “White,” areas were high grade and high quality. For an example, a simple water fountain, the ones that were labeled white dispensed nice, clean water. While on the other hand the colored labeled fountain was dirty and old. So eventually a bold, brave man named Martin Luther King, Jr. stepped up to the plate and spoke for all African Americans with his famous speech, “I have a dream.” This made a major change leading up to equal rights for all American citizens. Therefore people started to care for one another no matter the looks, or they started to shine light into the darkness. There are still problems today on how other people think and choose who they are but, eventually most of us hope it will flatten out to be for the greater good. Without those words and acts from other famous African Americans that stood up to racism/segregation, it would probably still exist.
I think that Aaron's response to this quote was great. tThis is because he had very well spoke it out to us and on what it really means. Also because he had related it to something very good. Though overall it was a very good response to Martin Luther King Jr's quote.
DeleteMartin Luther King Jr. once said " darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." I think this quote means that once you are in a certain place you can't get out of it unless you change the way you are. You learn from your mistakes so after you learn you change it and make it right. This quote can go so anyways but mostly for me it is like not hiding who you are and showing the real you. you can put yourself in the dark but you can't go into dark if you already are you need to get in the light. you can hate people but you can't keep hating because some things make you fall in love with it. it’s up to you to change yourself and no one else can. I think hating and then hating more to try to get out will get you know wheres because you are still alive and you have to love just a little to build up of getting out of the hate. This can relate to romeo and juliet because the families hated each other until they choose their lives and thats when the families came together that they loved each other and its because of their feud that they are dead. They loved each other because of there family feud and it took the two of them to die to the families to see that they loved each other and would do anything for each other. This quote can also relate to a movie because in the movie the guy was trying to change but couldn't. he never changed his ways but a little girl did because she gave a powerful hug that warms the heart and thats when he found the light and changed his hate into love. the movie is called Santa Claus 3: The escape claus .
ReplyDeletei think Sandy did a really great job. She used great examples and facts from stories we have previously read. Also, Sandy's essay entrance was easy to read and was all in all great.
DeleteI agree highly with sandy and Elena. I have sorts the same meaning as you. Mine said if you don't like something about you, you are the only person who'd be able to change it. Great job and you should definitely keep up the good work. Oh and great example of how this related to Romeo and Juliet.
Delete“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”, Martin Luther King Jr. I think Martin Luther King means that if u don’t change something you like it will even get worse. Since he is relating this quote on how black people were treated, i think he means that if black people keep dealing with getting hated on, it won’t change without a change. Martin Luther King showed how he tried to make a change and try and make light drive out darkness. This quote can not only relate to Martin Luther King and everyone in the 1930s but it can relate to anyone including me. One time when I was in Kindergarden i was afraid to sleep in the dark and i felt scared. THen my mom brought me a night light and all of the worries i had went away. And the funny thing is my experience related to the quote because it was literally that i was afraid of darkness and light drove it out. A quote that can relate to most people though is if u have ever gotten bullied, you know how it felt. It makes u feel angry about your self. If you have gotten bullied though you should go tell someone or stand up for your self. If you don’t, things would get worse. In the 1930s black people were getting bullied basically and it only got worse and Martin Luther King stepped up for them. See it can relate to most of us because at one point we were all probably scared of the dark or bullied. As you can see Martin Luther’s quote can mean a lot to us! Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
ReplyDelete“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that”. - Martin Luther King Jr. I think this quote means that love is the only thing that will eliminate hate. The only way to get out of darkness is if you have a light. The only way to get rid of hate is by love. For example, a person whos in the dark is ignorant. They don't have anyone to drive them into the light. Another example is, by hating someone so much and you telling other people, that person you told is gonna tell the next person and it going to start of cycle and everyone is going to hate the one person. The only way to not hate someone is find something good in them to try to love them. In conclusion, i think this quote means that to be a better person you have to.This quote can relate to romeo and juliet because, the two families, Montagues and Capulets, have a feud together. The two families absolutely hate each other. But the only thing that breaks their hate and turns it into love is the death of romeo and juliet. If romeo and juliet had never died then the two families would have still been in a feud. In conclusion, Martin Luther King Jr. once said,”Darkness cannot drive out darkness:only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate:only love can do that”.This quote means that love is the only thing that will eliminate hate.
ReplyDeletei think elenas is really good because she did exactly what the blog said to do. She used a really good example.
Deletei like elenas because her examples were reallly good and i like how she used good vocab. The way she described the quote is a good way to do it she is a good explainer.Like dont talk to someone who is ignorant it will only make you ignorant. The love is the only way to eliminate ignorance in the world.
DeleteDarkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
ReplyDeleteMartin Luther King, Jr.
I think this quote means that if somone hates someone else hating them isn't gonna make them stop hating them. Only love can stop someone from hating. An example from Romeo and juliet is when the Capulets and Montenteques hated each other but, romeo and juliet were in love at the end when they died because of love the familys stop hating each other.Beacause only love can drive out hate the familys stopped hating each other.
Martin Luther KingJr. once said: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that." What this quote means to me is that instead of giving back the hate that some people give you, you should just give them kindness instead like when some people say to "kill them with kindness" they mean kill the hate that they are giving you. It relates to when we talked about how with segregation there was a lot of descrimination toward dark skinned people but even though the whites said their racist slurs and cursed them the blacks still did peaceful things instead of revolting. An example from a book was when we were reading Romeo and Juliet. Allow me to explain, the Capulets and the Montagues were both rivaling families but despite going off with their parent's and family member's hate Romeo and Juliet killed all that hate with their love. They pushed all the "darkness" out of their families with love. Romeo and Juliet is by far the best overall example of this quote. Another example of this quote is in one of my personal favorite books called "The Compound." It is a story about a boy names Eli who was brought down into a compound made by his rich father and is down there with his mother and two sisters along side his father. He lost his twin brother and his grandmother, or so he was told by his father, the ringmaster and ruler of the compound. Throughout the story Eli is slowly peeling back secrets of his own father's plot. At the end of the story Eli and his two sisters must put aside their hatred and differences to escape the compound they have been trapped inside for six years. They drove out the hate of each other and replaced it with love and caring for one another and ultimately escaped the compound ran by their father.
ReplyDeleteI loved alex’s response to this quote. He makes much sense of it and puts detail into his explanation. I especially liked the part where he put in two examples for the quote. One of them was “Romeo and Juliet”, which we all know since we read it in class. and the other was a book he read called “The Compound”. So all in all, I like alex’s well rounded reply.
DeleteI agree with Alex on everything he wrote. You have to kill someone with kindness and not hate. You can't be mean and rude to someone to get them to stop being mean and rude. The only way to get them to stop is to ignore their hurtful comments and be nice to them. I liked all that Alex said in his response.
DeleteMartin Luther King Jr. once said "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate , only love can do that." What I think that this quote means is that darkness can dot drive out darkness because because it makes it even darker. Though light can drive out darkness because it makes things brighter than it is now. Also that hate can not drive out hate because of kind of the same thing that darkness does it just makes you hate something or someone even more. Though love can drive out hate because it makes that hate turn into kindness of forgiveness. T his is related to some of the things that we have learned about class is like the movie and book Romeo and Juliet which we had only finished about 4-5 weeks ago maybe. This is related to this quote and on what we have learned in class is because the Montague and Capulets hated each other but then after Romeo and Juliet's death they kind of started to get along because they loved each one. This is what I think that Martin Luther King Jr's quote means how and how it relates to a lot of things in class and in movies or books, watched or read.
ReplyDeleteMartin Luther king Jr. Once said, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." I believe this quote means that if you don't like something about yourself change it for something that you do. In other words, there is only of of you so make sure you like yourself and be true to yourself. Make a change and make things right. Be who you want yourself to be and no one else. This quote relates to me in various ways but I'll only say one way. It does by when I was younger I knew that when I grew up I was going to be working in a hair salon. But just because I like doing hair doesn't mean I'm going to do it all my life. I had to think of my future and realized I would like to be a nurse. Make a change and help people. First off if make more money and secondly it's making a better and bigger difference. So I don't mean I hate doing hair, I love it but it would be better for me to be a nurse if you look at the pros and cons. That is how the quote, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." By Martin Luther king Jr. Relates to me.
ReplyDeleteMartin Luther King Jr. once said that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”. This is a very inspirational quote that I find incredible. He describes the point of arguing and conflict. This quote relates to an older quote that everyone probably know by now, “You can’t fight fire with fire”. Which means you can’t fight about or with the same thing. So, if there was a fight, you don’t fight with or against someone in that fight. You would break it up by showing them a right path of peace and love. In Martin Luther King Jr.’s time, there were such racist and prejudice things going on around him that he could not stand for it anymore. The government was being very dark and hateful towards african americans. So, instead of being dark and hateful back to them, he showed them a path of good by not fighting with the same thing. doing so causes a war or a riot. But, since he chose a different path, he made a harmless boycott to show them their wrong doings of things like different water fountains, separate schools, different movie theaters, and them having to be told where to go on a bus. They were sick and tired of it so they did something about it. And that deserves a lot of respect. So since Martin Luther King Jr. did this, he got all deserving, well rounded respect for choosing the right path and not fighting back with a dark path of hatred. So that is why I find this quote very inspirational because he applied his own quote to his life and made it work by boycotting. He chose the right path and he got what he wanted, peacefully.
ReplyDeletedarkness cant run out darkness, only light can, hate can't run out hate only love can. Martin Luther King once said.this quote to me means that don't hate cause others hate.love And cancel the hate out because you don't want to be like others.a little love won't hurt in this world.more light is a good thing because darkness is filling this world. this quote can relate to me in some ways like I try not to be down when others are down.i try to cheer them up and make the best of it because I dont want to be upset all the time.Being upset is the worst thing that you can feel. if darkness is in you're life light isnt. If hate is in you're life love isnt in yore life and having love is the best feeling. this qoute can relate to istory because have people like hitler is the reason i like this qoute.Hitler was a cruel man who only ahd darkness in his life and not enough love in it.If he had light in his life he wouldnt do the things he did to those people. That is why this qoute still amazes me in many ways.Like it can relate to history and now
ReplyDelete“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” This quote is by Martin Luther King Jr. This quote is basically saying don’t fight fire with fire. You can’t expect to change something with the same thing. Like if you want the hate to stop, you can’t bully the person who’s hating. You have to warm their heart with love. The only way you can stop darkness is with light. You have to use the opposite effect to change something. This relates to situations or obstacles that we have discussed in class when we read Romeo and Juliet. Since Romeo and Juliet’s parents hated each other, the only way to stop the hate was to fight back with love. They didn’t hate each other like their families did. Since they did love each other, they were able to make the hate eventually stop. Even though they did die in the end, their love for each other dominated all the hate that was between the two families. This quote can relate to a book called The Scribbler of Dreams. This book is a lot like Romeo and Juliet. The Malones and the Crutchfields hated each other. Then Kaitlyn Malone and Bram Crutchfield started dating. Bram didn’t know Kaitlyn was a Malone. When he did find out she was a Malone, he was angry. Then he got over it and realized he loved her and didn’t care about what their families thought. The two families forgave each other. Again, the hate was driven out with love. Instead of Bram hating Kaitlyn, he loved her. He let his love for her overcome the hate. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that,” is a great quote by Martin Luther King Jr. that everyone should follow.
