Martin Luther King, Jr.
*What does this quote mean to you? How does it relate to to situations or obstacles we have discussed in class? Give an example from a movie, book or history that could relate to this quote and explain how it does.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can.” These are a few words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In my own words, this quote means that you can’t always depend on the same things to depend on each other, you sometimes have to let the opposite things depend on each other. Opposites attract, to sum it all up. By reading this quote, this is about the segregation of the white and colored peoples. What Dr. King is telling us by this quote is that everyone (people of many different colors) need to depend on each other by either driving each other out or learning to become equal to one another. This quote teaches us not to judge, discriminate, or stereotype anybody either by race, religion, sexual orientation, or their way of thought. In today’s society, we still do thee types of things to people, but we try to learn to respect these people, as well. The easiest thing to do to a person is to just respect them for who they are. You just have to treat them by the way you want to be treated. To sum up this paragraph, everyone’s life is different and rough, but you just have to respect that.
ReplyDeleteBy this quote, this relates to situations that I had discussed in class. We talked about how life was in the 1930’s and how segregation was at that time. The colored people at that time had a struggle of their way of life. They couldn’t go to many places, they couldn't do certain things, they had a curfew. It just plain out sucked for them at that time. There was this book that I had read last year called Night John. It was about the Black people teaching themselves how to read and trying not to get caught reading. It was around when the colored people were used as slaves. If they were caught trying to read, they were brutally punished. In conclusion, this quote relates on everything that we discussed in class and how everything had changed for all people.
vinny I think you did an awesome job describing what the quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can.” you expended my thought about it and put a new meaning in my head. you gave awesome details and really good reasoning's about it. also you did a great job relating the quote to society today and youre just so right about it. so good job!
Deletevinny, I really think that you did a great job on explaining the quote “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can.” By Martin Luther King Jr. You made me think of something completely different about the quote I have a whole new meaning on what the quote means. After reading your response it made it easier for me to do mine because you fully explained on what it ment. You are a really good writer keep it up!! good job vinny!!
Delete“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” this meaningful quote i think by Martin Luter King Jr. i think has many of different meanings to it but when i hear these certain words what automatically comes to my mind is to not judge anything before at least trying it .i think that many things could go completely wrong sometimes but then you know what works and what doesnt work at least. in other words basically like the saying “dont judge a book by its cover.” also to give things a shot some things that you think may not work best might work or help you in someway. you have to try new things go down the wrong path but climb back up it because that just might be it. but you will never really know until you try. i think this brilliant quote by MLK relates a lot to what we have been going over in class, which is segregation. segregation was what was happening in the 1930’s and it was a very depressing time for many african americans. majority of white people automatically thought all blacks were useless and not worth anything and should be put to work and be slaves. they did not give them a shot to even prove themselves. i think that that is terrible to treat someone who could be so smart and make a difference in the world. the book that we are reading now , kill a mockingbird i think can relate to this quote a lot. we may have just started reading it but even in the first chapter how everyone is just the radleys based on many rumor and just on stories they hear. i dont think that is right , but its true.
ReplyDeleteMartha, I completely agree on how you are describing this quote. I liked how you put down "do not judge a book by its cover". That is a good point of not discriminating or stereotyping anyone or anything. In conclusion, I thought you did a good job of explaining this quote
DeleteDarkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. These words were spoken by Martin Luther King, Jr. This quote at first is kinda confusing to understand, i had to read it a couple of times to understand the meaning of it. After reading this a couple of times i think that the quote means that you have to depend on each other to get rid of things you don’t want. Like for an example the only way to get rid of darkness is for the sun to come up in the morning giving in light and taking away darkness. To get rid of hate for someone you learn to love them and care for them instead of hating someone. Basically to sum up the whole quote is that you have to let someone or something's opposite things depend on each other to get them to go away. This relates to things we talk about in class because we talked about segregation and things not being far and having people being separated and life not being equal. Everyone back in the day were separated they were hated or loved never equal. They were all treated opposite from each other but through the years people began to treat people equal, the blacks and white began to talk and get along more leading us to now. Martin luther king wasn’t liked by a lot of white people but he changed a lot of things in the past that led us to how we act towards each other now, he was a really good man and did many good things to the world.
ReplyDeleteI think that the quote, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Said by Martin Luther King Jr. means that you can’t expect someone to be respectful to you when you a jerk to them. In other words, you need to treat others the way you want to be treated. If we were all kinder and closer together, the world would succeed in many things. An example of this is when the whites hated the blacks. All that ever came out of that situation was violence, and nothing was being done. This also relates to how the Jews were treated during WWll. This quote relates to modern day as well as back a long time ago. Now, in High school, when you walk through the halls, you always hear about someone hating another person for something that makes no sense. The point Martin Luther King Jr. was trying to prove was that if you are disrespectful, don’t think people will respect you. You can see this quote’s meaning in action every day. Some people are mean to me for no reason at all, but that doesn’t mean I’m disrespectful to them, they could always change. Although there are some people that dislike me for being “annoying”, or other things of that sort, I will still respect them. That is what this quote means and how it relates to not only me, but everyone.
