Hi! Welcome to blogger :) You will be responding to one topic a week that I post. Your post should be at least 200 words to start off with (they will eventually get longer but we'll start small) due Thursday by 11:59 pm and you will be responsible for responding (respectfully) to one of your classmates entries by Sunday at 11:59 pm. I will only post topics that I think will be easy for you to respond to until we get used to this. What I need you to do today is to comment on this post so that I know you can all access it. Today's question is...
What do you think about social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)? Does it sometimes infringe on our privacy without our knowledge? How does social media benefit us? Has social media changed the way we communicate? If yes, is it for the better or worse?
What I think about social media is that it is very helpful to the world but it also has it's faults like everything else. It can help people keep in touch and allow people to keep up with what is happening in the world. Although, despise some of the good things social media contains, it also can hurt many people. Because the world we live in, there are terrible people out there that want to hurt people and make them feel bad about themselves. Some people will reply to peoples post with nasty comments and hateful words to say. This can lead people into suicide or hurting themselves because other people other people are putting them down and making them feel like they are worthless. But, on the good side people also receive and send nice comments that help make people feel good about themselves as well. Social media help us communicate much more easily because when news has to get out, it is spread rapidly through social media. Even though, social media hurts many people, its for the best because it helps us so much and we grew to much into using it that we couldn't go a day without it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with joe. With all these good reasons on why social media can be good and bad, he expanded my view on social media. There are people out there that want to hurt other people by hurting people. I agree with joe it is bad, but it does help us in everyday life
DeleteI agree with Joey. He shows how social media can hurt people. But it also has its good uses. It helps us with everyday life. It also can be used in a very bad way.
DeleteWhat do i think about social media? I think that it is a very good invention in some ways and a bad one in others. It is a good invention because it helps us stay in contact with old friends, family, and other people you may know. I do not think that social media infringes on our privacy at all because you control everything that goes on it. everything you do on it is your own choice. Some benefits are, as i mentioned earlier, it helps us stay in contact with old friends and family. Another benefit of social media is helping us stay organized. people can make events to remind you about things going on. Social media has drastically changed the way we communicate. People no longer even talk to each other. everyone is always on their facebook or instagram. I much perfer to call someone on the phone or talk in person then text or facebook message someone. i think the invention of social media has had a negative effect on society. It is better, in my opinion, to have a conversation face to face then through facebook. Also people post inappropriate pictures and posts then don't get accepted into college or get a job because of it. Overall it is a change for the worse
ReplyDeleteWhat I think about social media is that it is fun and exciting! It is a chance to share and communicate with your friends out of school. Facebook, Instagram and twitter are all exciting new things that we as students love. Although some people may not use it, more than half the kids use it in Central. I personal think it is a great way to interact with friends and family members. For example, if you haven't seen a friend or family member in a while, catch up on things! Its a great thing to do in your spare time too!
ReplyDeleteBut on the hand, it is not as private as we think. Nobody knows how private the social media is. The truth is that it is really not private at all. You wouldn't know if your pictures are being seen, and you can't see who actually looks at your pictures or your status. You don't know if its safe or not. I do agree with this that people don't know if its private or not.. People don't actually know what is happening on social media. They just think they do.
Social media benefits us in a lot of ways. We can talk to friends, and catch up on things. But the most important to me is finding out news. It could be world-wide news or it could be family or friend related news. Maybe if something happened bad happened near you.
Social media has changed the way we communicated because over the years before we had iphones we used to talk on the phone, write letters, or talked face-to-face. Now social media lets us interact with each other daily in a fun way! It has gotten a lot better of the years!
I think that the social media can be good and bad in its own ways. My reasons why I would think the social media can be good is that it can be very helpful for communicating with a friend that lives far away. People can contact anyone at anytime they want with any social media sites like Facebook or Twitter. Although there is good reasons, there is also the bad ones too because cyber bullying can be accessible on any of these sites and it can be dangerous for young teenagers or even adults. I think social media does infringe on our privacy without our knowledge because some social media sites can offer people to share very personal information like our location, school, age, and more. It’s not safe to put that kind of information because you never know what kind of person is out there to stalk someone. Social media can benefit us by giving us an easy way to socialize with friends or family, it can benefit anyone who doesn’t have a cellular device. I think that the social media has changed the we communicate with people for the better and the worse. The reason why I think for the better is because you save less time traveling to see the person you want to talk to and there’s lower expenses. Also for the worse is that you get so used to socializing with people over the internet that you won’t become so open with people face to face. This is my overall opinion about the social media.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on all of it cause you didnt really pick a side you gave the goodness and the badness in social media.
DeleteI agree too. Every thing you said about social media I think is true. I liked how you included cyber bullying because it is a big part of social media. I also liked how you included both good and bad things about it. I agree with what you had to say about social media.
DeleteWhen it comes to social media, i have differed opinions. In some ways it is good, but in other ways not so much. It is basically like everything else, bad and good things come with it. One of the many things I enjoy about social media is that I can keep in touch with friends that I used to go to school with. Since I moved to Bayville, it has been difficult to keep in touch with many of my old friends. With school work and living about thirty minutes away social media is good to have to keep in touch and know what is going on in their lives. Also it is good to have to keep in contact with people that may live out of the country. Instead of having to charge money to your phone bill you can just message them through facebook! Social media is also helpful for us because it lets us know if any friends or family have any events or birthdays coming up.
ReplyDeleteSocial media has many ways to benefit us, but you can’t forget about the dangerous situations you can get in through social media. For an example, social media has many possibilities to draw stalkers toward your page. Some social media sites do have block settings but some do not. Even though they may have block settings it does not mean that everyone has their profile blocked. This can cause serious issues if you have a fake profile after you. You don’t know who is real and who isn’t unless you know them, or have serious proof. Social media is also a great way for exes, people you hate, or a friend that you are in a fight with to get back at you. They can post about you and also stalk you. The last, and in my opinion, worst thing about social media is that once it is out there, it is out there or good. Even if you have long since forgotten about facebook or instagram, some posts can come back to haunt you. Especially when you are about to get a job. Your boss can log on to one of the many social media sites and see things you may have been proud of in that certain time, but not so much anymore. As you can tell there are many good and bad things about social media that make it hard to figure out if we are better without it, or need it in our lives.
Hi Gianna!
DeleteI totally agree Gi!! You couldn't have said it any better. You honestly change my perspective towards social media! Reading your comment, made me realize how creepy social media can be, and how it can attract stalkers. We are so much better without all that mumbojumbo. It's scary thinking that one day your boss can log in to your social media sites and see all the good and or the bad choices you've made.Your essay/response was perfect!
DeleteI totally agree with this. Like Alexa said, you couldn't of said it any better. I strongly agree with, "It is basically like everything else, bad and good things come with it." Those are my thoughts exactly. Social media has both a positive side and a negative side.
DeleteI agree with Gianna. This perfectly explains social media. I think it explains the many good and bad things about social media. And this changes my views about social media. I also agree with what you said about things being on social media forever. It's true and I 100% agree with that.
DeleteI agree with Gianna completely. This explains so much that can not only affect someones future, but ruin their careers. This perfectly explains the true sides of social media. It is dangerous but at the same time fun. This really helps people understand the true sides of the social media world. It could not be explained any better!
DeleteWhat I think about social media is that it’s a fantastic thing to use most of the time. But then again they’re a horrible thing to use. It’s fun to see what your friend and family are up to and how their doing but sometimes social media can start a lot of problems and drama between two people. No, I don’t believe that social media infringes on our privacy. We can usually put our profiles on private and you can accept someone to look through your photos and/or statuses. For instance, instagram. If we put our pictures to private, the people who attempt to follow us will not see our pictures unless we accept them. Therefore, social media doesn’t really infringe on our privacy.
ReplyDeleteSocial media can benefit us by showing us what our friends/relatives are up to. Someone moved and you guys want to keep in touch? No problem, you can go on facebook and write her everyday. You have family out of state and you want to see what their up to and how they’ve been? You have instagram to see them by pictures. For example, my brother lives out of state and just had a little boy. I can’t see him so I go on instagram and theres pictures on there of him. Social media helps us in many ways.
Social media changes the way we communicate by using more of slang words rather than typing out the whole word. For instance, instead of saying “talk to you later” we write “ttyl” for short. Also, instead of saying “haha” we write “lol” for short (meaning laugh out loud). Instead of talking face to face to friends and family, we write to each other instead of meeting up. We don't interact with them as much. These things are good and bad in many ways. It’s good because it saves time and it simplifies little things for us. It’s not good because we basically don’t interact as much as we should be. Instead were on the phone the whole day. As you can see, social media can be good or bad in many types of ways.
I think social media is good and bad. I do have an instagram and I enjoy it. But sometimes, yes I believe social media can infringe on people’s privacy without their knowledge. For example, if you don't put your instagram on private anyone can follow you and look at your pictures. So some creeper could be following you without you even knowing. Social media does benefit us though. By using social media we can talk to family and friends, and catch up on what they are doing in their lives. Also if you have family members that live far away, it is a good way to communicate with them and catch-up with them. Yes, I believe social media has changed the way we communicate. Before cellphones were invented people would communicate verbally of through mail. Then when computers were invented people started using email, which people still use today. When phones were invented people talked on the phone. Then texting came along and that's what everyone uses now. So now that we have social media some people think they don't have to communicate verbally any more. So I believe communicating verbally has decreased since social media has started. So over all I think social media is good but some people just ruin it and that's why there are negative things about it.
ReplyDeleteMy views on social media, is it is both a waste of time, and fun! Social media was created to keep in touch with old peers, and friends. But people can take that for granted. Just like many other things in life, there are high and low points. Since I moved down the shore with my mom after my parents got divorced, I’ve used social media to keep in touch with most of my friends, that I couldn’t see on an everyday basis like before. For example, I’d use: Facebook,MySpace,Instagram, etc. All great social media sites, but people can ruin it for everyone. In my opinion, I believe social media can infringe on our privacy without our knowledge. On most sites, you have the option to be “private”. But is being private on a social media site, actually mean your “private”? When you go to click the make me private button on any site, it says: you will be private to anyone who isn’t following you, or hasn’t requested you on that site.. But I believe that even though you can be private on one site, people can still figure out a way to look at your profile without having to follow you. A big thing that confuses me, is why create the “privacy” option, if the social media site can go onto any private account/page and look at all they’re information? When facebook first came out, it was an amazing way to keep in touch with anyone whenever we wanted! But as the years passed, more and more social media sites came out and everyone signed up for those as well because it was the new fad. Since we discovered all these cool new sites, it’s all we use! I can’t name a time that I wasn’t on twitter talking to one of my friends, when I could just pick up my phone and call them to talk to them! Social media has made everyone so lazy, and it's such a bad thing. Most people nowadays would rather spend the day inside on the computer, rather than be outside enjoying the nature! All and all, social media has changed us. Not in a good way either!
ReplyDeleteI really agree with the fact that you said how people can see someones profile without even following or adding them. I knew that, and I bet a lot of people did too, but no one, including me, ever thinks of that. Anyone can just go on their friends phone or make a fake account to see your profile. I also agree on how you said it made people lazy over the years. Social media is all people use these days! I agree with everything you said.
DeleteI 100% agree with you Lex! Although it says your account is private it does not mean it is completely private. Also i agree on the fact that kids would much rather be inside on the computer than outside participating in activities with friends. I also totally agree on the fact that it does not only take you to ruin it for yourself but also it can be a complete stranger or a peer. I do also agree that is has made people a lot lazier than normal. All in all you really explained how social media changed us for the worse perfectly!
DeleteI certainly agree with this. It seems to me that many people spend way too much time on social media and I think a lot of people participate in it because many of their peers do.
DeleteI honestly believe social media is both good and bad. I think social media is good because, it's a great communication source. Even if it's to gossip or catch up on some things, you can always communicate with loved ones or friends. Keeping in touch is always good for family that live across the globe or friends that don't live close. It also helps for forgotten things. If you forgot what your homework was, you can always email your teacher. Or, you could be scrolling your page on twitter/facebook and ask someone what the homework for that class was.
ReplyDeleteI think social media is bad because you can find yourself in MANY dangerous situations. You have absolutely no privacy. Everything you do or say on the internet will stay there. Social media is also bad because you may come across a cyber bully. Cyber bullies will never go away. They drain you physically but more emotionally then anything. They take away your peace of mind. No matter what decision you make, despite it being good or bad, they'll always judge you for it. Suicide has increased 28.5% due to cyber bullying. That says a lot.
Social media has made each of us who we are today. Whether good or bad. It changes our perspective on everything. We may love it or hate it. But believe it or not, social media has changed our lives forever.
Everyone had different views of social media. What i think about social media is that it is very helpful to the world but it does cause harm to people, as in bullying. It can help with getting in touch with your friends and family through instant messaging or IM. It also keeps up with things going on world. With positives there are always negatives, social media is a big role in cyber bullying. Girls calling girls names, and starting stuff with them. People kill themselves because of people calling them names over the internet and these Social Media sites. You're supposed to be keeping up with your friends that you haven't talked to, not call each other names. I think it does infringe on our privacy because it tells you to share your information, that you don't know will might harm you. Giving out where you are going, can alert someone that you are not home and they might break into your home. People might take advantage of kids that are smaller. There are stalkers and child predators out there to take advantage of these kids that put their age and town on their profile. It has changed the way we talk. With Facetiming and just talking on the phone instead of writing letters and emails to people. You can talk face to face with love ones on Facetime. There are many good things with social media, and bad things with social media.
ReplyDeleteMitch that was well said i agree with you one hundred percent. I like how you specify your facts with stuff that goes on in the world. But you give reasons how it can affect people as well. Even though you love social media yourself you did reason with both sides. Good job mitc
DeleteI think that social media is a really great thing to have, but it does have its cons. Having things like twitter, facebook, and instagram help us communicate with other people like family and friends easily. Some people spend more time than needed on the internet. I don’t think that social media invades on our privacy only because it’s kind of a choice thing when it comes to putting your own setting on private. If you choose to, you can set your profile on mostly anything to private, or whatever you want or don’t want others to see. The consequences can be bad if you choose not to put your stuff on private. So you really have to know these consequences, because you can post a picture, status, or anything, and you'll regret it.
ReplyDeleteSocial media has changed the way we communicate. It's so much faster and easier. It definitely changed everything for the better. We used to have to send letters that could take days for others to see. I'm not even talking about just in the 1900s either. I have family in Brazil and Ireland, and I don't have to send them letters that could takes weeks for them to answer. I can just send them a message on Facebook or something. So I think social media changed everything for the better. It's just depends on how certain people use it.
Well, what I think Social Media can be a great tool and used as a weapon you can use it to find old friends from however long ago but you can also instigate and bully kids to the extent were it can cause kids to cut themselves or can lead to suicidal thoughts or to death which is horrible scaring thing to hear and people take it as if its a joke or just words on the internet the people that cause these problems think they own you or everybody because they don't say it in person witch is not right and foolish. And when they find out they caused someone to die its a problem then they get involved with the law and then your getting put up to court. But this all started cause you signed up for this stupid network so they can see all the drama. So i hope it was worth it.
ReplyDeleteJust to know the fact that anybody can look at anybody's account is a problem.A huge problem cause you don't know what that stalker or whatever that human is after you or wants to steal from you or whatever they are after they have that free tracker device on you if you post something they know and its not the greatest thing to have we don't going into about depth thinking about this problem cause your or somebody else can be in big danger and all you know is oh yea somebody liked my post or retweeted my tweet sometimes people should think about what they are going to say or going to comment. But its just so scary that something so harmless that you would think can be so strong if it gets into the wrong hands.
Social Media can benefit us in tons of ways if you own a business you can use it for publicity to make your money cause everybody has facebook or instagram or whatever but lots of people could find out about it.Or if you are older and you wanna meet up with your friends from 10 years ago and they have a facebook and you get in contact with them and you wanna meet up and maybe you guys become friends or you get married or whatever but it just can help bring the people from the past that you miss or whatever you like.
It has changed the way we talk for the better and i thinks its great cause its just more ways to get in touch with people or keep up with your friends its like having 2 phone numbers or more its just a great way to get in touch. If your phone breaks all man what do i do you go on your computer or laptop or ipod or whatever you have and you call the person or shoot them a im or whatever you and them do its just more ways to get in touch.
Social media is becoming more popular in the 21st century. For example, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social websites are being used on a daily basis. All of these websites benefit us in multiple ways. Since technology is rapidly advancing more and more every day, people are growing with it. Which is why most people use social media. It makes our lives more interesting and helps us connect with others. Without social media, no one would know what is going on in the world around them and with the people in their life. Therefore, social media gives a great advantage to people all around the world. Social media is great if it is used correctly. If you believe that it can interfere with your privacy, then don’t use it. Everything that you post online is your choice and if it is considered something private to you then don’t post it. There is also privacy settings available to use so you can’t blame any websites if people see something you consider private. If you just remember that everything you share online isn’t always private then social media can benefit you. The way we communicate with others has changed a lot since social media has become available. We can find out about other people and they can find out about us. Things that happen in the world can be found out in less than a day and we can talk to other people in an instant. Which is for the better. This is because with the world changing, we need to be updated on current events that can affect our lives. Social media does have downsides to it too but overall I believe it’s a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI do not use social media and therefore cannot formulate an elaborate opinion on this topic. Since I have not used social media it is hard for me to comment on something I haven't experienced. I am unaware of the inner workings of how it works. Based on my limited knowledge I believe that social media has both its pros and cons. Facebook and Twitter allow you to communicate with people you are friends with. You can use it to reconnect with people that would otherwise have been impossible, which is certainly a benefit. There are multiple privacy settings that allow you to decide who sees what and how much. To the extent of the knowledge I have that is truly the best I can answer. My parents have set limits for me where social media is concerned for my own protection and until they feel I have reached a certain maturity. So I guess a negative to social media would be how there could be a stigma attached to someone who does not use it and have the knowledge of how it works. The benefit of not using it is that why I am still young I am not posting things that can come back to haunt me later in life.
ReplyDeleteI think social media is a good and bad thing. A double edged sword as some people might say. It is a good thing because it helps people become more social. For example if you don't have a phone you can always find your friends on social media like twitter. Another reason it is useful is it can keep you up to date on what is happening. Lets just say a really bad storm hits New Jersey again. You lose power, and you don't have t.v or a computer. You can always check your phone and go on social media to keep yourself updated. So social media has it up sides in todays life. But it also it very dangerous if not use properly. People get bullied daily on things like twitter and facebook. People feel a lot stronger behind a keyboard then they do in real life. People who bully people over the internet feel like they are immune to consequences that would otherwise affect them in real life. Another thing that is dangerous about social media is the spreading of rumors. It spreads so fast there is no way to contain it. So as I mentioned early social media can make people meet new people also cause damage to people. It is very useful if used correctly.
ReplyDeleteI feel that social media such as facebook, twitter and instagram are important to have but not be taken advantage of. The reason for this is that they have become such an important part of society and the way people live but can also be something that people become dependent on. Certain things that these sites require can intrude on our privacy without us being aware. Some websites ask for information that is very personal and once that is on the internet it is possible for anyone to find it without you knowing. Social media can benefit us in many ways. One way is that we can communicate with people from all over the world without actually having to be in their presence. It is possible to have a face to face conversation with someone who lives in another country at any given time. Social media has changed the way people communicate in many ways. Some of these ways changed for the worse. Many people are spending more time on social media and less time actually being social. Another way social media is bad is that people are not always who you think they are and can be dangerous to others.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The use of social media is a privilege that should not be taken advantage of. Too much of a good thing isn't always a good thing. The use of technology today is amazing and your statement with Face-to-Face video chatting proved the point.
DeleteSocial media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are huge aspects of some of today's youth's daily lives. But, what some people don’t know is that the way that all of your private data is saved and backed up to last forever online. Google saves all of your searches, Your facebook profile is usually displayed as public, (Same with twitter and Instagram), And the most important information can fall through loopholes into someone else’s hands. Although it has it’s faults, Social media is a huge benefit. Not only does it make contacting someone so much easier, but the fact that you can talk to someone with the click of a button is amazing! There are cons to this though. Even though it helps us speak to people online, It could be taking away from our social activity in the real world. With a lack of social public experience,m social anxiety can become an issue. Another key fact is that you never know who you’re meeting behind the screen. So yes, Social media has changed the way we communicate forever. Social media has affected communication for the better, but people need to keep in mind how dangerous it can be to talk to strangers online.
ReplyDeleteAll of your points are very valid. I like how you pointed out the good and bad of all aspects. Being able to talk to someone nearly instantaneously has changed the world forever. I particularly like how you mentioned that you do not always know exactly who you are talking to. But my favorite part is how you pointed out how social anxiety can be related to lack of real world socialization. I agree that social media has contributed to it in some teens. Online socialization is (sadly) not the same as the real world.
